A cone (or mandrel) is for hammering barstock into perfect conical rings or scroll shapes.  It sits in the anvils' hardy hole vertically and has a purpose similar to the horn on an anvil.  In years past mandrel's were also used to make bindings for wheel hubs.

Mandrel has a tong groove and is made of ductile iron. Finish is foundry cast.
